Envision Smiles is a community-focused oral health program under the Difference in Action Initiative branch of Envision Difference. Through education, direct outreach, and connection to dental resources, the program works to address the preventable oral health disparities that disproportionately affect adolescents and individuals experiencing homelessness.

Envision Smiles was created to close these gaps through consistent, community-driven action rather than one-time interventions.

Envision Difference is a registered nonprofit organization. All fellowship placements are volunteer-based and governed by a formal Volunteer Fellowship Agreement.

Barriers including limited access to care, lack of education, and financial hardship contribute to preventable dental disease and long-term health consequences for some of the communities we serve. Envision Smiles was created to close these gaps through consistent, community-driven action rather than one-time interventions.
Objectives:
The program operates around three core commitments:
- Oral Health Education for Adolescents: We provide age-appropriate education on brushing and flossing techniques, nutrition, cavity prevention, and the value of routine dental care. Workshops and hands-on activities are delivered in schools, shelters, and community centers, with the goal of building lifelong healthy habits.
- Support for Unhoused Populations: We connect individuals experiencing homelessness with local dental clinics, free and low-cost services, mobile dental units, and public insurance resources. When feasible, we also distribute oral hygiene kits including toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and educational materials during outreach events.
- Volunteer Engagement and Training: We create meaningful opportunities for volunteers interested in dentistry, medicine, public health, or community service to engage directly with underserved populations. Volunteers receive training in oral health education, trauma-informed communication, and culturally sensitive outreach.
Program Activities:
- Educational workshops for adolescents in schools and youth programs
- Community outreach events in collaboration with shelters and food pantries
- Resource navigation support and referral assistance
- Oral hygiene kit drives and distribution
- Collaboration with dental schools, clinics, and public health organizations
